讲座题目：High School Algebra Made More Interesting

内容摘要：

I’m sure that High School Algebra was already very interesting but in this talk we hope to make it even more interesting by uncovering a simple question with surprising solution and connections to a range of open problems in mathematics.

In the 1960s, the famous logician Alfred Tarski asked whether the usual laws for addition, multiplication and exponentiation are sufficient to derive all true laws for these operations.  Equivalently: is there some other true law in these operations that is not a consequence of the ones we teach our high school students?  

Surprisingly, the answer is yes, there really are such laws and in fact there are infinitely many of them, each not a consequence of the earlier ones.  

How does one even prove that one law is not a consequence of another?  How do we even know when a given law is true?  These types of questions lead us to the mysterious world of finite models of high school algebra as well as number theoretic questions such as is e^(e^(e^(e^e))) an integer?  

主讲人简介：马塞尔·杰克逊教授现任澳大利亚乐卓博大学计算、工程与91自拍 副院长及研究生研究主任，同时担任数学与物理科学系学术骨干。此外，杰克逊教授还担任澳大利亚研究委员会（ARC）专家委员会委员（2023-2025）、澳大利亚代数学会司库、在国际顶尖专业期刊中担任核心职务，包括《Algebra Universalis》（泛代数领域）联合主编及《Semigroup Forum》（半群理论领域）副主编。

杰克逊教授的研究主要集中在代数及其与逻辑学、组合数学和理论计算机科学的交叉领域。他作为首席研究员（Lead CI）主持了一项ARC发现项目（Discovery Project）。此外，他也是“泛代数及其应用研究小组”的负责人。该小组在乐卓博大学主办了众多学术会议，包括GAIA2013（泛代数及其应用国际会议）和USMaC2016（数学与计算中的泛结构国际会议），并自2000年起定期举办学术研讨会。

在学术管理方面，杰克逊教授曾全程担任数学与计算学科研究项目副主任（2014-2017年），后任研究与产业合作主任（2019-2021年）。自2022年起，他出任计算、工程与91自拍 副院长（分管研究与产业合作）；同时，也一直担任该学院的研究生研究主任。
